Frequently Asked Questions for Clocks

1. What do I do if my clock strikes a different hour than the hands point to?

2. Where can I get a replacement key or other parts?

3. How do I set the correct time on my clock?

4. How do I fix my pendulum clock if it is running too fast or too slow?

5. What does the moon dial do?

6. What needs to be done in order to maintain my clock?

7. How do I turn off the chimes on my clock?

8. What if my mechanical clock is in the "night off" position and it is silent during the day instead of the night?

9. Can I increase or decrease the chime volume in my mechanical clock?

10. What if a chime rod is broken?

11. What if my mechanical clock operated fine for several years but now is slow or stopping?

12. What if my pendulum hangs crooked?

1. Move the hour hand (shorter hand)forward or backward to the correct hour on the dial as indicated by the number of times the hour strikes.

2. We sell keys, hands, suspension springs, quartz units, chime units, and grandfather units. Please contact us at: sales@newenglandclockshop.com so we can accomodate your needs.

3. Move the minute hand (longer hand),only in a clockwise direction, to the correct hour on the dial. If you have a strike or chime clock, make sure you pause at each position on the dial to allow for your clocks natural chime or strike.

4. Directly under the pendulum disc, find the thumb screw. If your clock is running too fast, turn the screw to make it go down. If your clock is running too slow, turn the screw to make it go up. Make only small or partial turns on the screw and try out the adjustment for a couple of days between each change. Simple phrase to remember how to do this: Speed up, move up; slow down, move down.

5. When properly set, the moon dial tracks the lunar month and the cycle of the full moon.

6. Have a professional technician oil and adjust your clock every 2-3 years.

7. A lot of newer clocks have a silence lever to turn off the chimes and a night shut-off lever to turn off the chimes during the night. For clocks without shut-off levers, you can simply not pull up the weight that powers the chime. For a key wound clock, you can simply not wind the barrel that powers the chime.

8. Rotate the minute hand counterclockwise twelve hours. DO NOT MOVE THE HANDS WHILE THE CLOCK IS CHIMING OR STRIKING.

9. No. Volume is not adjustable.

10. Contact us for replacement parts.

11. It is likely that your clock movement needs maintenance. Contact a local professional who is Bonded, Licensed and insured.

12. To straighten the pendulum, first remove it from the clock. With one hand, hold the pendulum below the top strap. With the other hand, grasp the pendulum bob. Gently twist the pendulum in the direction necessary to eliminate the twist.
